Pectin is the methylated ester of polygalacturonic acid and has a wide range of applications. It can be used in food and animal feed as well as in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. Pectin is traditionally used as a gelling agent in fruit-based products, as a stabilizer in some fruit juices and milk drinks and fruit filling for bakery and confectionary products, but their potential applications differ according to their chemical composition. Analysis of the proteins involved in the structure and synthesis of the cell wall of Ustilago maydis

Abstract A study of the proteins involved in the synthesis and structure of the cell wall of Ustilago maydis was made by in silico analysis of the fungal genome, with reference to supporting experimental evidence. The composition of the cell wall of U. maydis shows similarities with the structural composition of the walls of Ascomycetes, but also shows important differential features. Accordingly, the enzymes involved in the synthesis of the U. maydis wall polysaccharides chitin and β-1,6 glucans displayed some differential characteristics. Structural Composition of Protozooplankton Communities in Relation to Environmental Factors in Shallow Lakes and Reservoirs of Rīga, Latvia

Abstract Protozooplankton are dominant grazers of phytoplankton and an important component of the microbial food web, as a link between pico and nanoplankton to higher trophic levels. Their fast growing rate, relative abundance, biomass and diversity are used as indicators of organic and toxic pollution. The impact of urbanisation on ecosystems and their sustainability and biodiversity have recently been much studied. We studied the protozooplankton ciliate communities during the vegetation period from April to October in two small lakes (Bābelītis, Gaiļezers) and two reservoirs (Bolderāja, Saurieši).
